My Sister's House

My Sister's House

September 07, 2021, Beatriz Aurelio

*Trigger Warning*

If you, or someone you know in the Sacramento Greater Area, are a victim of domestic violence please call: (916) 428-3271, My Sister's House 24-hour Multilingual Crisis Helpline. This page is dedicated to inform you on how to spot abuse in a relationship.

With the rise in anti-Asian sentiment, Tuk Tuk Box is doing our part to reframe the narrative surrounding our Asian communities by Spreading Asian Joy. We're doing this by supporting, and celebrating all of the accomplishments in the Asian American community with emphasis on Southeast Asian communities. We believe confronting issues of racism and calling on our friends to reframe anti-Asian sentiments they have learned can help dispel myths surrounding our communities that we're all victims, stereotypes, or The Model Minority. We must end the negativity, as well as encourage and celebrate our joy as a means of resistance.

Tuk Tuk Box is proud to partner with My Sister's House on our Spread Asian Joy campaign. Proceeds from our Spread Asian Joy campaign will go directly to My Sister's House.

My Sister's House, established in 2004 by Nilda Valmores, is a non-profit organization based in Sacramento, CA that serves Asian and Pacific Islander and other underserved women and children impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Their mission is to provide culturally appropriate and responsive services.

“Working toward homes without violence and lives without fear"- My Sister's House

WHAT MY SISTER'S HOUSE OFFERS

One of the programs offered at My Sister's House is Safe Haven Shelter Program, the only shelter in the Central Valley region that serves the needs of its highly diverse Asian and Pacific Islander population. This confidential emergency shelter provides a safe, comfortable and culturally-appropriate environment for its residents. Clients are provided with basic food and supplies, case management and support throughout their stay (up to 90 days). Along with the emergency shelter are two, confidential, 6 bed transitional houses.

My Sister's House also offers counseling sessions that range from single sessions to an 8 week commitment. These informational and empowering sessions are: Domestic Violence Education, Healing Through Art, Parenting Classes, and a monthly #MeToo Sexual Assault Survivor Support Group.

My Sister's Cafe

My Sister's Cafe, established in 2014, is a volunteer-based support program. My Sister's House utilizes the cafe to help domestic violence survivors "get back on their feet" financially. The cafe gives women transferrable skills that they can use to find jobs in many fields. Previous alumni of this program have gone on to work in other local restaurants, while others have accepted jobs at Google and Apple campus restaurants. Not only does this cafe allow for more job opportunities, but it also allows women who are part of the program a chance to feel connected to other people again.

Proceeds from the cafe go directly back to My Sister's House programs and client services. My Sister's Cafe, located in Downtown Sacramento in the Capitol Mall, is open from Monday - Friday from 8 am to 2:30 pm. They offer different types of Banh Mi sandwiches, wraps, salads, and various coffee and tea drinks, including boba drinks. Catering is also available for breakfast, brunch, and lunch.

Visit their website for their complete menu and to hire them for your next event:

Run For a Safe Haven

Run For a Safe Haven, established in 2003, is My Sister's House annual 5K Run/Walk event. Held in October of each year and with over 1000 annual participants, everyone is invited to run/walk/hop/skip/rollerblade their way through William Land Park in Sacramento, CA.

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, this event is being offered in person and through virtual participation. Participants can run/walk by themselves or form teams of 10+. Children ages 12 and under are able to participate in a 1/2 mile run. Pets can also join in on the fun for a small fee. There is an award ceremony at the end of the race, from fastest time uploaded to best dressed pet.
